London River Services , part ofTransport for London . The RNLI rescue service is independent of TfL. Scheduled river bus services do not stop at the lifeboat pier, and it is not open to public.History
The Thames has a long history of accidents and collisions, and the river claims a number of lives each year. As a result of the
Marchioness disaster in 1989 when 51 people died, the Government asked theMaritime and Coastguard Agency , thePort of London Authority and theRoyal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) to work together to set up a dedicated search and rescue service for the tidal River Thames. As a result, the RNLI began operations on the Thames. [cite web
