"The Morning Gift" tells the story of Ruth Berger, a 20 year-old Jewish girl living in
Vienna . When the Nazis take over, the Bergers escape to England, not realizing that Ruth has not been allowed to leave Austria because of her political leanings. Quinton Somerville, a scientist who studied under Prof Berger, Ruth's father, arrives in Vienna for an awards ceremony and finds that Prof Berger has been dismissed. Visiting the Berger's home, Quinton finds that Ruth is the only person left, hiding out while she tries to find a way to get to her family in England. After various attempts to get Ruth a passport, Quniton realizes that the only way to get her out of the city quickly is for her to marry him-- she would then become a British citizen and have no trouble leaving Austria for England. The plan works and, once in London, Quinton's lawyer works to procure a divorce for Quinton and Ruth. Meanwhile, the university that Ruth is set to attend is forced to transfer her, and she finds herself studying as a student of Prof Somerville. She is set to marry Heini, a musician, but throughout the book falls in love with Prof Somerville. With many misunderstandings along the way they end up as a happy family.
