Walker's parents were wealthy American businessman George Herbert Walker and his wife Lucretia "Loulie" (Wear) Walker (1874–1961). He married Mary Carter (20 November 1905 – 5 September 1998) on 29 October 1927, and they were the parents of three children, including U.S. Ambassador to Hungary George Herbert Walker III. He is the uncle of President George Herbert Walker Bush, to whom he was extremely close. "Uncle Herbie" helped sponsor President George H.W. Bush's entry into the oil business in the 1950s.
