- Kaffa Province, Ethiopia
Kaffa was a province on the southwestern side of
Ethiopia ; its capital city wasJimma . It was named after the formerKingdom of Kaffa .Kaffa was bordered on the west by
Sudan , on the northwest by Illubabor, on the north by Walega, on the northeast byShewa , on the east by Sidamo, and on the southeast byGamu-Gofa .History
This province was created in
1942 , following the liberation of Ethiopia from Italian occupation, by combining the following provinces created from conquered states into one administrative subdivision: the kingdoms of theGibe region , Janjero, Kaffa,Goldiya ,Shewa Gimira ,Benesso ,Guraferda , andMaji . [This was part of the general reorganization that Emperor Haile Selassie undertook after his return in1942 . Paul B. Henze, "Layers of Time" (New York: Palgrave, 2000), pp. 237f.] As a result the Kingdom of Kaffa, which was conquered byMenelik II of Ethiopia in1897 , contributed the name to the new province, while theKingdom of Jimma , an old rival to Kaffa, contributed the capital city.With the adoption of the constitution in
