- Alexander of Myndus
Alexander (Gr. polytonic|Ἀλέξανδρος) of
Myndus inCaria was anancient Greek writer who some believe lived during the first century AD but this date is uncertain.cite encyclopedia | last = Schmitz | first = Leonhard | authorlink = | title = Alexander of Myndus | editor = William Smith | encyclopedia =Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology | volume = 1 | pages = 123 | publisher =Little, Brown and Company | location = Boston | year = 1867 | url = http://www.ancientlibrary.com/smith-bio/0132.html] He wrote on diverse topics, includingzoology anddivination . His works, which are now lost, must have been considered very valuable by the ancients, since they refer to them very frequently; fragments of his work are preserved in various later authors. The titles of his works are: "A History of Beasts" (polytonic|Κτηνῶν Ἱστορία), a long fragment of which, belonging to the second book, is quoted by
Athenaeus . [Athenaeus , v. p. 221, comp. ii. p. 65] [Aelian , "Hist. An." iii. 23, iv. 33, v. 27, x. 34] This work is probably the same as that which in other passages is called "On Animals" (polytonic|Περὶ Ζώων), and of whichAthenaeus likewise quotes the second book. [Athenaeus , ix. p. 392] The treatise "On Birds" (polytonic|Περὶ Πτηνῶν) was a separate work, and the second book of it is quoted by Athenaeus. [Plutarch , "Marius" 17] [Athenaeus , ix. pp. 387, 388, 390, &c.]Diogenes Laërtius mentions one "Alexon of Myndus" as the author of a work on myths, of which he quotes the ninth book. [Diogenes Laërtius , i. 29] This author being otherwise unknown, the French scholarGilles Ménage proposed to read "Alexander" instead of "Alexon". But everything is uncertain, and the conjecture is thought by other scholars to be improbable. It is possible that the illustrations of birds in the
Vienna Dioscurides , which appear to be based on illustrations from an older, different treatise, as they don't relate directly to the treatise they illustrate, are derived from illustrations from the lost treatise on birds of Alexander of Myndus.References
