Morehead-Cain Scholarship
The Morehead-Cain Scholarship (originally the Morehead Scholarship) is a full four-year scholarship modeled after the
Rhodes Scholarship . It is named for its benefactors,John Motley Morehead III and the Gordon and Mary Cain Foundation. The scholarship covers tuition, books, room and board, and a laptop computer. Additionally, each summer, scholars participate in a summer enrichment program. Each summer has a different theme:* Before Freshman Year: Outdoor Leadership. Scholars participate in
NOLS andOutward Bound courses throughout the country. Morehead-Cain Scholars are given an opportunity to push themselves physically and mentally though a number of grueling challenges.
* Before Sophomore Year: Public Service. This summer students travel the world performing public service in a variety of settings. Projects range from teaching fellowships inNew York City topre-natal care inRwanda .
* Before Junior Year: Travel Study. This summer is an opportunity for scholars to design a research topic and travel the world exploring for answers. Projects have included investigation of modern transportation in communist nations to exploration oftraditional medicine inSouth America .
* Before Senior Year: Enterprise. During this final year scholars are encouraged to work in a professional capacity. Projects have ranged from policy work with theWorld Health Organization to Investment Banking and Industry Research withGoldman Sachs .Notable alumni include author

Robertson Scholars Program is a full-ride merit scholarship and leadership development program atDuke University and theUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that covers all college costs (tuition, fees, room and board, laptop, etc.). It also provides full funding for three summers of global travel, research, and internships, and gives recipients a unique “dual citizenship” where they are full students at both Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill.Carolina Covenant
In 2003, Chancellor
James Moeser announced the Carolina Covenant, which provides a debt free education to low-income students who are academically qualified to attend the university. The program was the second in the nation (following Princeton) and the first of its kind at a public university. Around 80 other universities have since followed suit.
