St Matthew's Church is an historic
Anglican church in Kensington in the eastern suburbs ofAdelaide ,South Australia . It is adjacent toMarryatville High School .History
The land for the church was donated in
1848 by theSouth Australia Company , who received it fromGeorge Brunskill . Many notable early South Australians are buried on its grounds, including:
* Colonel Peter Edgerton Warburton, noted South Australian explorer and police commissioner, who died in 1889. His eldest daughter married the only son ofAugustus Short , the first Anglican bishop of Adelaide.
* Baroness von Oertzen, born "Matilda Goulding", January 1, 1840, inMarlborough ,England , died April 27, 1864, in South Australia, ancestress of BaronKlaus von Oertzen .Current status
It is closely associated with St Bartholomew's in Norwood, the next suburb north. They serve as both evangelical and conservative Anglican churches. The current Rector is the Rev. Dr. Tim Harris who leads a team of clergy in the Kensington-Norwood partnership.
The church runs three services every Sunday: traditional, family and youth services. It also runs a youth program, hence supporting a large congregation of all ages.
