* 1868 – Manningham station opens on the Midland Railway north of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England.
* 1869 – Henry Keyes succeeds Henry C. Lord as president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.
* 1871 – William J. Palmer announces that the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad will be built using RailGauge|3 gauge tracks.
* 1881 – The first train operates between Norwood, Ohio, and Lebanon, Ohio, on the Cincinnati Northern Railway.
* 1885 – The Southern Pacific Railroad and Central Pacific Railroad are combined under a single holding company, the Southern Pacific Company.

* 1950 – Rockville Centre, New York, United States: a head-on collision between two Long Island Rail Road commuter trains kills 32 and injures 158.
