- Paul Carrington (DJ)
Paul Carrington is a DJ on
BBC Radio Leeds , from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. During his show he often interviews minor and former celebrities, such as recent interviews withPaul Heaton andGillian McKeith . His producer-in-chief Katy Lambert orchestrates much of the output. Paul often refers to his wife 'Mrs Carrington' throughout the programme, to the point at which she has almost become an 'off set' character on the programme (similar to Mrs Mainwarring inDad's Army ).His previous presenting job was at Magic 828 on the Breakfast show, between 6:00am and 10:00am. He became known for impressions such as Sir Jimmy Saville and Frank Spencer, although the latter was often confused with the footballer David Beckham. Paul's regular teasing of newsreader Steve Sheard became a feature of the show, and the reporter took on new names such as "Tiddles" and "Boy" before himself escaping to the BBC.
Paul started his Radio career in 1982 at Manchester's Piccadilly Radio as a production assistant on Timmy Mallet's show (along with a certain Chris Evans). During his 9 year stay at Piccadilly, he was a Commercial Producer, Programmes Producer and latterly, Presenter. He presented a wide variety of shows including Lates and Drivetime and it was here that the Late Night Funster Show was born.
Following his departure from Piccadilly, Paul headed south on the M6 to Stoke on Trent where he spent over 3 years at Signal. During this time, he presented the Breakfast Show for which he received a Sony Bronze Award in the Best Breakfast Show category. He also hosted the Late night Funster Show on the new Signal Network which included Signal Cheshire, formally
KFM , nowImagine FM . From there, he came to Yorkshire - his adoptive home - in 1993 to present Afternoons on Viking FM.The following year, he was on the move again having been tempted by newly formed Minster FM in York to be Programme Controller and Breakfast Presenter. The frequent 18 hour days soon began to take their toll, and a year later, the Metro Radio Group invited him to rejoin them to host the Breakfast Show on Bradford's The Pulse and then as Programme Controller of their AM Gold network Great Yorkshire Gold.
A takeover by Emap Radio meant a management reshuffle and Paul left to join GWR's Classic Gold Network as Network Evening Presenter and Head of Music, alongside his radio heroes like DLT, Paul Burnett and Simon Bates. Reluctant to make the move south, Paul had his garage converted into a studio so he could broadcast from his home in York! During this time, he was also Weekend Breakfast Presenter on Emap's new Magic 1161. When the weekday Breakfast Presenter announced his departure in 1998, Paul was asked to takeover the show. He stayed for 4 years until being persuaded to present the Breakfast Show on Magic 828 in Leeds following the sad death of the much loved Peter Tait in 2002.
