History
Heaton Mersey railway station was opened on 1 January 1880 by the
Midland Railway and lay on the newly opened line from Heaton Mersey East Junction to Chorlton Junction and on to Manchester Central station. The station was situated at the southern end of Station Road which still exists. The extension to Station Road, running into the western end of Craig Road, lies on the old track bed of the Midland line from Stockport Tiviot Dale. The station was later operated by theLondon Midland and Scottish Railway and was closed by British Railways Midland Region on 3 July 1961. From January 1889 until 4 May 1968, there was a steam locomotive running shed named Heaton Mersey, which lay on the north bank of the Mersey and reached by a foot bridge still extant leading from Gorsey Bank Road.Education
Saint Winifred's RC Primary School, famous for its choir and chart hits in the 1980s, is situated in Heaton Mersey. Other
state -run primary schools include Mersey Vale, St. John's (Church of England ), Didsbury Road and Tithe Barn. Stella Maris is an independent primary school. The localcomprehensive school is Priestnall. Pre-schools are Freshfields, Didsbury Road and Mersey Vale.Community Facilities
