Esther Kapiolani Kawānanakoa was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, the youngest daughter of Princess Abigail Kapiolani Kawānanakoa during her marriage with Andrew Anderson Lambert. According to some her mother became the head of the House of Kawānanakoa upon the death of her uncle Prince Edward D. Kawānanakoa; and an older sister, Virginia Poomaikelani Kawānanakoa, with Edward four years her senior and Poomaikelani two years. She was the last child of her mother.

She is a namesake of her great-great aunt Queen Esther Kapiʻolani, who was in turn a namesake of High Chiefess Kapiʻolani of Hilo who had defied Pele, the Volcano goddess, and embrace Christianity in 1825. Marchesa Kapiolani Marignoli is an Honorary Advisor of the Friends of ʻIolani Palace.

She married Marchese Filippo Marignoli (1926–1995), an abstract artist who was the younger son of Don Giulio Marignoli, Marquess di Montecorona, by his wife, Donna Marinetta, Marchioness di Montecornona, the former Marinetta Trotta, and through their union she became the Marchesa Kapiolani Marignoli. With her husband she had a son and two daughters: Duccio Kaumualii Marignoli, Esmeralda Kapiolani Marignoli and Teresa Elelule Marignoli.[1]
