Prince Edward A. Kawananakoa, formally Edward Abnel Keliiahonui Kawananakoa (October 2, 1924 – July 29, 1997) was a leader of the native Hawaiian community and by virtue of his birth as a collateral relative of King David Kalakaua and Queen Esther Kapi'olani was heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Hawai'i. He was born to Abigail Kawananakoa and her first husband, Andrew A. Lambert, in San Francisco, California. His sisters were Princess Virginia Poomaikelani Kapooloku Kawānanakoa and Princess Esther Kapiolani Kawānanakoa He was named after his great-uncle Prince Edward Abnel Keliiahonui who died of scarlet fever. He attended and graduated from Punahou School and then left Hawai'i for Menlo Junior College. While in California, he joined the Army Air Corps and served as a pilot in World War II. He rejected an appointment to the United States Military Academy and instead obtained a degree from the University of Southern California. In 1946, Kawananakoa married Lila de Clark Whitaker. In 1960, the couple were divorced. Kawananakoa married again to Carolyn Branch and had two children of their own. In 1997, Kawananakoa died and was survived by his wife, eight children and his two sisters, Poomaikelani Kawananakoa and Kapiolani Marignoli and cousin Abigail Kinoike Kekaulike Kawananakoa.
