Immigration

In the middle ages, the region of Macedonia was part of the Ottoman Empire. For the inhabitants of the region, Romanian states (Wallachia and Moldavia) presented an ideal for political, religious and social freedom, so much of the population emigrated. The first document, showing migration of Macedonians, to Romania, was found in 1300. In "judeţul" (district) Timiş, a village with the name "Macedonia" (Romanian: "Machidonia") was mentioned in documents in 1332-1337. However, there is not eveidences about the ethnic belonging of the population of this village - Slavs or Aromnians.

Another documented instance of the migration from Macedonia was when Nicodim of Prilep came to Valahia from Prilep and built monasteries in Tismana, Vodiţa, Prislop, Vişina. [One of the versions about the origin of Nicodim from Prilep is that he was Bulgarian from Macedonia (Трайков, Веселин и Николай Жечев. Българската емиграция в Румъния, ХІV век-1878, София 1986, с. 279). Other versions, about his nonslavic origin see in: Lăzărescu, Em. Nicodim de la Tismana şi rolul său în cultura romească, Romanoslavica, XI, 1965, p. 237-282] Many Macedonians left for Wallachia, because they had good relations with Aromanians in Romania, (who had also migrated from the southern Balkans)and other Macedonians in Wallachia. The current member of the Macedonian minority in Romania is Vasile Ioan Savu [ [http://www.parlament.ro/pls/parlam/aleg.parl?crp=2&ilg=2000&grp=2000&idl=1 Alegeri pentru Camera Deputatilor - Minoritãþi - 26 noiembrie 2000 ] ] . The Party is headed by Liana Dumitrescu in the parliamentary group of national minorities. [AMR in Parliment-http://www.cdep.ro/pls/parlam/structura.mp?idm=38&cam=2&leg=2004&idl=2] At the 2000 elections the group received 8,000 votes, [AMR party -http://www.divers.ro/situatia_recenta_macedonenii_ro] and in 2004, 3 Macedonian political parties from Romania, lead and participated at election by AMR, obtained more than 25 000 votes. [Macedonians in Romania -http://www.divers.ro/situatia_recenta_macedonenii_ro] However two other Political Parties, Asociatia Macedonenilor din Romania and Asociaţia Cultura a Macedonenilor din România also polled well with 9595 and 9750 votes respectively. [http://electoral.ro/parlament_2004.html] This has prompted many people to estimate the number of Macedonians in Romania at over 20,000.
