John Joseph O'Connor (Bishop of Newark)

John Joseph O'Connor was the fourth Catholic bishop of the Diocese of Newark, New Jersey. He was born in Newark on 11 June 1855. He entered the seminary at a young age and studied at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. After completing his studies at the university and his seminary training at the American College of the Immaculate Conception, he was ordained a priest on 22 December 1877 for the Diocese of Newark. He was appointed bishop of that diocese on 24 May 1901 by Leo XIII, and ordained bishop on 25 July 1901.
