In 2006, Genden performed the first jaw transplant in New York State, on a 54-year-old woman who carried the donated jaw in one of her back muscles for eight months. Along with fellow Mount Sinai doctor
Alex Greenberg , Genden devised a plan that added the patient's hip bone marrow and muscle to the donor jaw, which led to the first-ever successful jaw transplant using a patient's bone marrow.Tracheal transplant
In 2003, Genden performed a highly unusual tracheotomy surgery that combined donor trachea
cartilage with tissue from his patient. This innovation minimized the potential for rejection and, equally significantly, allowed the patient to communicate normally post-surgery.Awards, honors and recognition
