Leonard Beyers

Leonard Beyers

Lieutenant-General Leonard Beyers (1894-1959) was a South African military commander.

Beyers joined the Union Defence Forces as a staff officer in 1913. From 1932 to 1939 he was detached to the Department of Justice as director of prisons. During World War II he served as adjutant-general of the UDF.

Beyers retired in 1945 but returned briefly to serve as Chief of the General Staff, i.e. head of the UDF for ten months in 1949-1950. A modest man, he refused to accept any decorations, or to wear any medals because he had not been on active service.
