In October 3, 2010 Brazil will choose the successor of president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. If none of the canditates receive more than half of the valid votes, a run-off will be held on October 24.
Brazilians will also choose all members of the Chamber of Deputies, two thirds of the Federal Senate, as well 26 governors of 26 states and of the Federal District.
According to the Constitution of Brazil, the President is elected directly to a four-year term, with a term limt of two terms. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is not allowed to run again, because he was elected in 2002 and reelected in 2006.
Potential candidates
In the president Lula's Workers'Party and its allies, the most promising canditates are:
-Dilma Rousseff, the Chief of Staff of Brazil;
-Ciro Gomes, elected for the Chamber of Deputies and member of the Brazilian Socialist Party;
In the opposition side, the most promising candidates are:
-Aecio Neves, Governor of Minas Gerais state and member of the Brazilian Social Democratic Party;
-Jose Serra, Governor of São Paulo state member of the Brazilian Social Democratic Party;
-Heloisa Helena, member of the Socialism and Freedom Party.
