Fresh Pond is a small neighborhood in
Queens separated from Juniper Valley by the Lutheran and Mount Olivet cemeteries. Its main streets, Fresh Pond Road, Metropolitan Avenue, Eliot Avenue and 61st street, meet at the communitys commercial center. Fresh Pond is served by the Fresh Pond Road and Middle Village–Metropolitan Avenue stations of theBMT Myrtle Avenue Line of theNew York City Subway . It is also the home of a Bus Depot for the metropolitan transit authority of New York.A former
Long Island Rail Road freight station of theMontauk Branch and theFresh Pond Yard lie east of the corner of Metropolitan Avenue and Fresh Pond Road. The freight only Bushwick Branch of the LIRR branches off below (west of) the Fresh Pond yard before crossingFlushing Avenue . Freightcars interchange here with theNew York Connecting Railroad including those from Bay Ridge and theNew York Cross Harbor Railroad .The area was originally named for a fresh water pond which was long ago filled in. Other ponds were lower, and brackish due to
Newtown Creek being estuarine.Ridgewood, Queens andGlendale, Queens , are its neighbors to the south and west, respectively.External links
