"Un Enfant de toi" is a 1987 pop song recorded by the French singer Phil Barney. It was released as a single twice : first in 1987 from the album "Recto-verseau", then as a duet with Marlène Duval in 2002. Both versions were hits reaching the top 3 on the French Singles Chart, but the cover version was even more successful than the original.

Background

"Un Enfant de toi" was written and the music composed by Pierre Zito and Phil Barney.

This song is has a romantic melody. It tells the story of a man who is soon going to become father, his wife being pregnant. However, the delivery takes place badly and the woman dies by giving birth to a boy, named Jason. The father, who addresses directly his deceased wife in the song, tells ten years later how he brought up their son. [Elia Habib, "Muz hit. tubes", p. 115 (ISBN 2-9518832-0-X)]

In 2002, Marlène Duval, a young contestant of the French TV reality show "Loft Story 2", didn't stop singing "Un Enfant de toi" when she participated in the show. Therefore, when she came out the loft, Phil Barney proposed to the young woman re-recording the song in a duet version. She accepted and the song was released as a single. [Elia Habib, "Muz hit. tubes", p. 558 (ISBN 2-9518832-0-X)] The two singers started a tour to promote it.
