He was born in Galveston, Texas, where he sang as a boy in church. He moved to Los Angeles, California as a teen and won several contests there as a singer. Following this he moved to the Netherlands, where he had a hit with the song "Rock the Boat", a cover of the Hues Corporation's 1974 #1 hit. Forrest's version was also a hit in the UK (#4 in the UK Singles ChartSearch for "Forrest" performed at [http://everyhit.com/searchsec.php Everyhit.com] database on April 25, 2008.] ) and the U.S. (#9 Hot Dance Club Play). He later married television presenter Manon Thomas and had two sons. After his separation he concentrated on music. He sang in a theater show, "R.E.S.P.E.C.T.", in 2001, a show dedicated to 1960s soul music. He was then asked by DJ Roog to front the band, Planet Hardsoul, who had a minor hit with the single "Where Did Our Love Go".

From 2004 Forrest sang in an 1980s flashback tour.
