"The Pillory" is a satire magazine at The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, USA. The magazine was founded in the spring of 1991 and publishes one issue per semester. [http://www.thepillory.org/?page_id=2 "The Pillory" online: About us] . Accessed April 25, 2008.] It does not have any competitors per se, as it is not a news reporting magazine. It is well-known on the College of William & Mary’s campus, however, that "The Pillory" and "The Virginia Informer" generally dislike one another. [ [http://www.thepillory.org/?p=41 "The Pillory" online: Va. Informer humor column enjoyed unironically] . In the inaugural publication of "The Pillory", the staff and editors wrote:

"This is the freshman issue of The Pillory, a student magazine of comedy and satire. The pillory was traditionally a device used to expose transgressors to public ridicule. In that tradition, we intend to expose those that have made themselves ridiculous to all of us. We are not a journal of student opinion. We do not have an axe to grind. We are here solely to irritate and annoy. All political and ethical positions are subject to comedy, as are those whose last names begin with either a consonant or a vowel. We guarantee that everything we print will be in good taste, but we don’t guarantee that your taste will be the same as ours. We mean our tactful malice in the best possible way, but those that [sic] insist on taking it badly may do so. Please bear in mind, however, that those lacking a sense of humor are merely setting themselves up for more of the same treatment."
