Carlisle Pike, referred to by locals as "The Pike" is a major arterial route in Cumberland County,
Pennsylvania . Rumored to have originally been a Native American trail, the Pike is now a significant center ofurban sprawl serving much of Harrisburg's western suburbs.Location
The Pike stretches through the eastern part of Cumberland county while it passes through Middlesex township, the small unincorporated village of New Kingston, Silver Spring and Hampden township. Most of the route is tagged with
U.S. Route 11 , except in part of Hampden township. At its western terminus, the Pike becomes the Harrisburg Pike in Middlesex township, and its eastern terminus becomes Market street in Hampden township before it crosses into the borough of Camp Hill and eventually Harrisburg.Commercial Development
The Carlisle Pike serves as a major shopping destination for the western part of the
Harrisburg area due to the easy access to the rest of themetro area and the wide variety ofstrip malls and Big-box stores.
