Hampden Township is the largest municipality in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 24,135 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 18.0 square miles (46.5 km²), of which, 17.8 square miles (46.0 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.5 km²) of it (1.00%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 24,135 people, 9,577 households, and 6,914 families residing in the township. The population density was 1,358.1 people per square mile (524.4/km²). There were 9,990 housing units at an average density of 562.2/sq mi (217.1/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 93.97% White, 0.86% African American, 0.14% Native American, 3.75% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.20% of the population.

There were 9,577 households out of which 33.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.7% were married couples living together, 7.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.8% were non-families. 23.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.95.

In the township the population was spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 27.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 94.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.7 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $60,011, and the median income for a family was $70,009. Males had a median income of $48,848 versus $32,277 for females. The per capita income for the township was $28,977. About 1.5% of families and 2.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.0% of those under age 18 and 3.8% of those age 65 or over.

Hampden Township is served by the Cumberland Valley School District. The township is home to three public elementary schools and one public middle school.
