The 52nd Signal Battalion provides strategic and tactical command, control and computer support for Headquarters
U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) and otherDefense Department (DoD) activities. Provide sustaining-base Information Mission Area (IMA) support, including automation, telecommunication, printing and publication and records management for Headquarters 6th Area Support Group (ASG) and all tenant units within the 6th ASG area of responsibility.The 587th Signal Company was originally activated on 30 March 1944 at
Camp Pickett , Virginia and deployed to the Philippine Islands. After completing its mission, the unit was deactivated on 20 January 1945. It was reactivated on 1 June 1966 atFort Irwin , California, and was once again deployed overseas, this time to Vietnam. After seeing combat, the company was credited for gallantry in several campaigns. On 1 July 1976, the 587th Signal Company was reactivated at its present location inStuttgart-Vaihingen Germany under the 52d Signal Battalion, 160th Signal Brigade. During the 5th Signal Command reorganization, the Company doubled in size, growing to a total of 337 soldiers and 20 communication sites spread throughout southern Germany. In 1991, the 587th Signal Company was placed under the 302d Signal Battalion. On 14 June 1994, the 587th Signal Company was again reassigned to the 52d Signal Battalion, 2nd Signal Brigade. The Company's size was reduced to 235 soldiers and 9 communication sites. This included the newly acquired sites of Project 329 atBad Aibling , the Tech Control at Augsburg and the Automated Multi-Media Exchange from the 52d Signal Battalion.The 587th Signal Company was credited with campaign participation in the Counteroffensive, Phase II, III, IV, V and VII as well as, Tet Counter offensive, Summer-Fall 1969, Winter-Spring 1970 and the Sanctuary Counteroffensive. Prior to the Unit's Deactivation in Vietnam on 15 December 1970, it received the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Streamer embroidered, Vietnam 1967-1968 and the Vietnamese Civil Action Honor Medal, First Class, Streamer embroidered, Vietnam 1967-1970, by order of the Secretary of the Army.
