John Davies (archivist)

John Davies A.M.N. (July 27, 1925 – October 21,1999) was an archivist, writer, and received the prestigous Ahli Mangku Negara award. He served as the Archives Executive Officer during the 1960s through to the late 1970s with the National Archives of Malaysia, Petaling Jaya. He was a leading authority on the conservation and preservation of documents.

Davies was born in Parit Buntar Perak, Malaysia to Sanghuni Joseph and Marial Joseph and was of Indian Malayali descent.During the Japanese occupation of Malaya in WWII Davies served as a rations officer, he later then met Tan Sri Mubin Sheppard whom had then saw potential in Davies and offered him a position at the National Archives of Malaysia. Davies then excelled in his profession and was promoted to Archives Executive Officer. Davies published several books and then went further on to travel overseas to England, where he studied and refined his art. During this period of his career Mr Davies was awarded the Ahli Mangku Negara award from the Raja of Selangor for his service at the Malaysian Archives. Being a leading figure head on presevation he was required to lecture on many occasions through out Asia, Europe, Australia and Africa.

Later life

During the 80's John Davies had migrated to Australia and worked as a senior Archivist at the Archives on New South Wales for several years.

Family

Mr John Davies was Married to Muriel Pavalam David, they had 7 children and 10 grand children.

Death

In his later years John Davies lived on the upper northshore of Sydney in the suburb of Hornsby. Mr Davies died on October 21st 1999 at the Royal Northshore Hospital Sydney at the age of 74.
