Marinara Sauce

The Italian American name for a tomato sauce made from olive oil, ripe tomatoes, garlic and herbs. Considered a little spicy compared to tomato sauce, this red sauce is easily prepared and marries well with any pasta dish. It is also commonly known to be added to mozzarella sticks, chicken, calzones and seafood.

The sauce first originated from Naples after the Spaniards introduced the tomato. The word "marinara" is derived from marinaro, which is Italian for “of the sea.” Because of this, many people mistakenly believe marinara sauce includes some type of fish or seafood. However, marinara sauce loosely translates as “the sauce of the sailors,” because it was a meatless sauce extensively used on sailing ships before modern refrigeration techniques were invented.

Many people over the years have altered marinara sauce recipes, adding in their own spices such as oregano, black pepper, basil, parsley and chili pepper.
