Dynamic art

Dynamic art is one of the extensions of digital art, in which the conception of a continuous movement is a basis for the creation of art. It is a means of art expression and a way to gather contemporary artists willing to provide their creations with a life of their own. Dynamic art is grounded in the process of time and its consequences on the artistic environment, and in practice resorts essentially to digital techniques.

Dynamic art aims particularly to animate pictures and give digital creations the breath of life that was dear to Surrealist painters. Its purpose is not to create an obvious change in the work itself, but to endow it with a movement that will eventually bring the work "to life". This can be achieved by animating a work of art continuously, briefly, repetitively or randomly; the different types of animation that can be used include real-time evolving, unique, varied or even imperceptible animation.

Examples of Dynamic creations include
* landscape evolving as time goes by,
* digital portrait ageing in real time, and
* evolutional 3D sculpture

'Digital Motherhood', 2003, by the digital artist Patrick Goubet is a good example of what Dynamic Art is. Five artists were asked to design and create everyday, and in real time, the imaginary environment of a digital nine-month gestation. During the digital work's daily evolution, from the first day onwards to the last day nine months later, reality, actuality and the imaginary were deeply interwoven.
