Croatian People's Party (1919)

Croatian People's Party ( _hr. Hrvatska pučka stranka, HPS) is a right-wing political party in Croatia.

Historic party

The original party was founded in 1919 and participated in elections in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes until the royal dictatorship 1929. In the 1920 elections, the party ran together with the Bunjevac-Šokac Party. The HPS had nine representatives elected: from the former Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia were V. Deželić, Rev. J. Šimrak and S. Barić; from the former Kingdom of Dalmatia were dr. Ante Dulibić, dr. Dominik Mazzi and Mate Milanović-Litre; from Herzegovina were fra. D. Buntić, dr. Marko Rebac and dr. After King Alexander declared a dictatorship on January 6, 1929 the party was abandoned and officially ceased to exist by police decree on January 21.

Modern resurrection

The modern party was founded in 1999 by Tomislav Merčep after his departure from Croatian Democratic Union. The party fielded candidates in 2000 and 2005 presidential elections.

The party had limited success on local elections.
