Political career

Schrader served 16 years on the Canby Planning Commission before running for the Oregon House of Representatives in 1994, where he lost to Republican Jerry Grisham by just 38 votes.cite news|title=More absentees vote but alter few races|last=Hunsberger|first=Brent|work=The Oregonian|date=1996-11-11] In 1996, Schrader ran again, and this time, defeated Paul Kraxburger.cite news|title=Grisham wins by 38 votes|last=Kohler|first=Vince|work=The Oregonian|date=1994-11-15] He was subsequently reelected to the House in 1998 and 2000.
