Wincanton was founded in 1925, as Wincanton Transport & Engineering Ltd, a subsidiary of West Surrey Central Dairy Company Ltd.cite web|url=http://www.wincantonplc.com/wincanton/history.jsp?tn=1&sn=1|title=History & Business|publisher=Wincanton Plc|accessdate=2008-04-26] (The parent has since been known as Cow & Gate, Unigate and UNIQ.)In 2001, Wincanton plc demerged from UNIQ, and was listed on the London Stock Exchange.

Although the company's origins are in Wincanton, Somerset, the company's head office is now in the Methuen Park district in Chippenham, Wiltshire.
