Papal election, August-September 1276

Papal election, August-September 1276

The papal election from August 19 to September 8, 1276 is the only papal election since the promulgation of "In Nomine Domine" (1059) which elected two popes, and the only papal election to be the third election of the same year. The election was also the first non-conclave, since the establishment of the papal conclave after the papal election, 1268–1271.

The ten cardinal-electors originally elected Vicedominus de Vicedominis, the cardinal-nephew of Pope Gregory X on September 5 [The eleventh elector, Riccardo Annibaldi, had died a day before on September 4, 1276.] , but he died within hours of his election, before it could be proclaimed. The nine remaining electors then proceeded to elect João Pedro Julião on September 8, who took the name Pope John XXI, the first and only Portuguese pope.Miranda, Salvator. 1998.
