John Michael Carney (born April 20, 1964 in city-state|Hartford|Connecticut) is an American football placekicker for the New York Giants of the National Football League. He was signed by the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent in 1987. He played college football at Notre Dame.

Carney has also been a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Diego Chargers, Los Angeles Rams, New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars and Kansas City Chiefs. He was a Pro Bowl selection with the Chargers in 1994.

High school years

Carney attended Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach, Florida, and was a letterman in football. In football, he won All-State honors as a kicker.

College years

Carney attended Notre Dame and played football there from 1984 to 1986. He was named to the Notre Dame's all time team by "Sports Illustrated".

Professional career

Carney entered the National Football League in 1987 as a replacement player for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the 1987 NFL Strike. As a regular player, he has played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1988-1989), the San Diego Chargers (1990-2000) and the New Orleans Saints (2001-2007). As of the beginning of the 2007 season, he is ranked 4th on the NFL all time scoring list with 1,749 points.Fact|date=September 2008 He is the last remaining player to have participated in a 1987 replacement game. He is also one of three remaining players to have worn the old orange Buccaneers uniform, the others being John Lynch (American football) and Derrick Brooks.

Carney kicked many game winners throughout his career but the most memorable would be against Carolina after Hurricane Katrina.Fact|date=September 2008 He then graced the cover of Sports Illustrated w/ QB Aaron Brooks on September 19, 2005 as the city celebrated this uplifting victory.

On April 5, 2007, Carney asked and was given permission to leave the Saints after their acquisition of kicker Olindo Mare. After Week 1 of the 2007 NFL Season, Carney signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Carney replaced Josh Scobee, who injured a leg during pre-game warmups on Sunday, September 9th, and missed several weeks.

Carney was cut on November 19, 2007, after Scobee returned. On November 26, 2007, the "Kansas City Star" reported that the Kansas City Chiefs would sign Carney after holding tryouts to replace Dave Rayner - making Carney the fourth placekicker to play for the Chiefs within a one-year period, following Lawrence Tynes, Justin Medlock and Rayner.

On August 30, 2008, Carney signed with the New York Giants to fill in while Lawrence Tynes recovers from a knee injury sustained in 2008 National Football League Training Camp. At age 44, Carney is the oldest active NFL player. [ [http://www.courant.com/services/newspaper/printedition/sports/hc-giants0831.artaug31,0,1489135.story Giants Sign Carney, 44, At Kicker] ]
