Growden Mansion

Growden Mansion

Growden Mansion, a historical landmark, sits in the heart of Bensalem, a city about 5 miles north of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The history of Growden Masion dates back to the late 1600s when Joseph Growden and Lawrence Growden purchased about 5,000 acres from William Penn. In 1683 Joseph Growden settled on this land and built a manor for the Growden family. In 1753, Joseph Growden's granddaughter Grace Galloway and her husband Joseph Galloway inherited the land. Since women could not own property during this time, Joseph Galloway became the soul proprietor. Joseph Growden, good friend of Benjamin Franklin, developed the property and built additions to the house. While Benjamin Franklin was visiting at the Growden Mansion, Benjamin decided to fly a kite during an electrical storm to prove static electricity exists. Other significant historical figures such as George Washington and John Adams have also stayed at Growden Manor.
