Leonard James Ashton

Leonard James Ashton was the inaugural Bishop of Cyprus and the Gulf“ [Who was Who 1897-2007” London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 9780713634573] . Born in 1915 [Crockford's clerical directory (London, Church House 1975) ISBN 0108153674) ] and educated at Tyndale Hall,Bristol he was ordained in 1943 and after a curacy at Cheadle was for nearly 30 years an RAF Chaplain [Latterly as Archdeacon of the RAF] . From 1974 until 1976 he was "Assistant Bishop of Jerusalem" prior to the re-organisation [ The Times, Thursday, Jul 31, 1975; pg. 6; Issue 59462; col B "Church reorganized in Middle East"] that lead to his elevation to the Episcopate.
