- Edbrowse
Edbrowse (or edbrowse) is a
command-line program forUnix-like systems that combines features oftext editor s,web browser s, andemail clients . It was originally intended for blind users. Its interface is vaguely similar to ed, but includes several changes, including commands to select links and buttons and regular expressions based on
PCRE . Many of the error messages are expanded compared to "ed"'s single question mark. The user can flip between the raw source and "browse mode" with a single command; browse mode allows the selection of objects on the page. The browser only displays links, widgets, and common structures (such as lists); it cannot display images due to its text-only nature, and it ignores rendering for text formatting (such as bold and italic). According to the author, such formatting is irrelevant to blind users and can be found in the source code if truly needed. "edbrowse" also includes JavaScript support in versions 2 and 3. The second version used an engine created by the author; the third depends on SpiderMonkey.
