Accountability software

Accountability software

Accountability software, or Internet accountability software, is a type of computer software that provides detailed reports that account for one's actions on the Internet.

Concept of accountability software

"Internet accountability" is an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one's actions on the Internet. Varieties of accountability software monitor Internet use on a personal computer, or Internet use by a specific user on a computer. These software applications then generate reports of Internet use, usually viewable to a third party (sometimes called an "accountability partner"), that account for an individual’s Internet browsing.

Covenant Eyes pioneered this concept of [http://video.aol.com/video-detail/covenant-eyes-internet-accountability/272132360/ Internet accountability software] . In March of 2000, Covenant Eyes accountability software was developed to provide Internet users with a means of reporting one’s online activity to one or more accountability partners.

Today there are several accountability software providers. This software primarily appeals to those who wish to avoid viewing Internet pornography and has been used widely in sexual/pornography addiction circles.

The concept of an "accountability partner" is a well-known concept in addiction-recovery circles and twelve-step programs, such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Sexaholics Anonymous. Accountability partners, in Alcoholics Anonymous for example, are called "sponsors." When accountability partners have access to one’s Internet browsing record, this limits or removes the anonymity of Internet use, thus providing incentive to not view Internet pornography or other explicit sexual images online.

Difference from spyware

Spyware is computer software that is installed stealthily on a personal computer to intercept or take partial control over the user's interaction with the computer, without the user's informed consent. Accountability software is not a type of spyware. Accountability software, first, makes its presence known to the user (sometimes by providing an icon in the system tray or a "splash screen" when the computer is rebooted). Spyware attempts to conceal its presence. Accountability software is installed willingly by the user. Spyware is installed without consent of the user. Accountability software reports information to accountability partners chosen by the user and thus provides a means for opening dialog about Internet use.
