Kirkwood started his career with East Fife and joined Rangers under Graeme Souness in 1987. After a disappointing spell in Glasgow he re-joined The Fifers on loan and signed for Hearts. He played with Airdrieonians and Raith Rovers before retiring. He scored from the penalty spot for Raith Rovers against his old club Rangers in what turned out to be a Rangers victory. [1]
On 8 June 2011, he was confirmed as the new manager of Scottish Highland League side Wick Academy.[2]
