He started his theological studies at a very young age in Gorgan and later joined the Qom Islamic Seminary. He was studying in Qom around the time when
Seyyed Ali Khamenei , Iran's currentSupreme Leader , andAkbar Hashemi Rafsanjani were also students.Career
He was appointed by
Ayatollah Khomeini asFriday Prayer Imam of Gorgan, Iran in summer 1979, only six months after the victory of theIslamic Revolution in February 1979. He was also appointed as special representative of Ayatollah Khomeini, in Gorgan in fall 1982. His position was reaffirmed by Khomeini's successor Ali Khamenei in 1989. He is considered to be a traditionally conservative clergyman with some reformist tendencies in modern politics of Iran.He is married with four children, three sons and one daughter.
