Pearson Test of English is a new high stakes test of academic English developed by Pearson Language Tests [ [http://www.reuters.com/article/pressRelease/idUS188890+04-Mar-2008+PRN20080304 Reuters press release] ] in collaboration with Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the organisation responsible for the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test). Pearson Language Tests is a division of Pearson PLC and is currently undertaking field tests of the new Pearson Test of English (PTE), which is due to be launched in 2009. The PTE is a new international computer-based English language test that uses twenty often innovative and integrated item types. PTE meets the needs of universities, higher education institutions and professional and government organisations requiring a real life measure of candidates’ language ability.

Focusing on the needs of both educational institutions and test-takers, PTE uses a variety of new technologies to enhance the testing experience. Institutions obtain comprehensive and robust information about the actual language skills of applicants to make informed decisions in a timely manner. The test is computer-based (CBT) and will be delivered through the secure network of Pearson VUE centres, which are also responsible for delivering the GMAT worldwide.
