Saint-Méen Abbey

Saint-Méen Abbey

Saint-Méen Abbey (Abbaye de Saint-Méen, initially Abbaye Saint-Jean de Gaël) in Saint-Méen-le-Grand, Brittany, was founded in the sixth century by Meven (Méen), after whom it was eventually named.

The original foundation had fallen into disuse by the end of the eighth century. Hélocar, bishop of Alet, refounded it in 818. It was destroyed by Vikings in 919.

About a century later it was reconstructed as a Benedictine monastery. In the seventeenth century it passed through the hands of Maurists, Oratorians and Lazarists.
