- Canadian Tamil Congress
Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) is a non-profit agency whose purpose is to be a "unified voice" (CTC website)Fact|date=April 2008 for Canada's 300,000 Tamils. The CTC has actively served Canada's Tamil community since October 2000 with the objectives of promoting the participation and adjustment/settlement of Tamils in Canada, to promote Tamil language and culture, to teach about Tamil history and current situation, to support Tamil refugees worldwide (but particularly in Sri Lanka), and to encourage humanitarian volunteerism and multiculturalism.
The Canadian Tamil Congress was developed within the historical context of Tamil refugees arriving in Canada in 1983. At that time, there were large numbers of Tamil refugees and immigrants who fled to Canada after violence broke out in 1983 in Sri Lanka. This violence peaked in July of 1983 (known as "Black July") during which time Tamils were raped, beaten and killed by mobs of people from the Sri Lankan majority (CTC website).
Because of the Canadian government's response to the violence in the form of accepting Tamil refugees from Sri Lanka, the Tamil community as a whole is active in supporting humanitarian causes and are proud to be living in Canada(Canadian Tamil Congress representative Dr. Meera Selvakone, July 1st, 2008, addressing volunteers and blood donors at a CTC-organized blood donor clinic by the Canadian Blood Services).
