chool Newspaper
The school newspaper, The Mountaineer, is a recipient of the
Pennsylvania School Press Association Gold Award for Overall Excellence. Its staff consistently receives high-ranking awards for its in-depth coverage of school and teen related topics. Its current adviser is Mr. Matthew Sobrinski. In the past, it was funded entirely through local advertisers and sold for fifty cents to the student body. However, in the 2007-2008 school year, school funding has allowed the staff to disseminate the periodical to every student in the building.Five issues are typically printed each year through the local newspaper, the
Pocono Record . The front, center, and back are full color pages.Marching Band
The high school marching band is known for its rejection of traditional marching band and drum corps values. Under the direction of Mr. Harold Cassady, the band almost never takes part in adjudications as an official competitor, choosing to perform, as they say, "for the Friday night football crowd," playing rock and pop songs people recognize, as opposed to classical, performance music. Along with the promotion school spirit, the Stroudsburg Marching Band plays when the opposing team is on Offense in order to drown out the voices on field, causing at least 5 fumbles, interceptions, etc. per football game.
The band has performed at USSBA shows at Giants Stadium multiple times, several as the closing group in festival performance. One member shares their thoughts on their 2004 performance:
"It was incredible. The whole show was just... really pumped, and we could tell we got the audience pumped. We had a couple thousand people dancing and singing along to Bohemian Rhapsody, and that's an incredible feeling."
New Building Controversy
With an influx of new students, the district has expressed the need for a new building. Residents are debating whether the current building should be renovated or whether a new building should be built to accommodate this growth.
