State Route 904 (SR 904) is an arterial road that provides access to the city of Cheney, Washington and Eastern Washington University. The route connects Interstate 90 at exit 257 at Tyler, Washington to Interstate 90 at exit 270 at Four Lakes, Washington. The current average daily traffic volume is 15,301 vehicles that is growing at an annual rate of 2.5%. There are ongoing capacity and safety concerns for State Route 904, as there have been a number of off-road crashes and rearend collisions.

History

On February 18, 2003, the Washington State Department of Transportation honored Lt. Col. Michael P. Anderson, one of the Columbia astronauts, by renaming State Route 904 after him.

WSDOT Road Development Plan

The Washington State Department of Transportation has created a Route Development Plan (RDP) addresses a segment of SR 904 for the northern city limit for the City of Cheney extending thorugh the town of Four Lakes, Washington to Interstate 90. Under this plan, io accommodate existing and projected growth, enhance safety and preserve capacity, the Washington State Department of Transportation is recommending increasing the highway to a five lane undivided alignment, at an approximate cost of $14.1 million:

• Constructing two additional lanes for through traffic

• Constructing one additional lane through the center for a two way left turn lane

• Implementing partial access control along segment
