Theodore "Red" Saunders (March 2, 1912,
Memphis, Tennessee - March 5, 1981,Chicago ) was an Americanjazz drummer. He also playedvibraphone andtimpani .Early in his career, Saunders played in
Milwaukee and Chicago, playing withStomp King , and then spent several years working withTiny Parham at theSavoy Ballroom . In 1937, the Club DeLisa gave Saunders control of his own band, where he remained into the 1950s. Among his sidemen were Leon Washington.Despite his regular gig, Saunders also played with
Duke Ellington ,Louis Armstrong , andWoody Herman , and recorded withBig Joe Turner . He continued to lead a band at the Regal Theater in Chicago into the 1960s, and played withLittle Brother Montgomery andArt Hodes at theNew Orleans Jazz Festival in the 1970s.References
