The E05 or E5 is part of the
United Nations international E-road network . It is the westernmost north-south "reference road", running fromGreenock ,Scotland south throughFrance toAlgeciras ,Spain . Greenock -Paisley -Govan -Glasgow -Gretna -Carlisle - Penrith -Preston -Warrington -Liverpool -Birmingham - Newbury -Southampton -Le Havre -Paris -Orléans -Tours -Poitiers -Bordeaux -San Sebastián -Burgos -Madrid - Córdoba -Sevilla -Cádiz -Algeciras United Kingdom
Like all other E-roads, the E05 is not signed or recognised in the
United Kingdom . It follows the following roads:
*A8 and M8,Greenock intoGlasgow
*M8 through Glasgow
*M74, A74(M) and A74, Glasgow viaGretna toCarlisle
*M6, Carlisle via Penrith,Preston ,Liverpool andWarrington toBirmingham
**TheM6 Toll provides an alternative route in the Birmingham area.
*M42, M40, A34 and M3, Birmingham via Newbury toSouthampton The E05 has a gap at the
English Channel between Southampton andLe Havre ,France . There is no directferry link, but a ferry from nearbyPortsmouth connects to Le Havre.France
In
France , the E05 is signed. It uses the following roads:
*A131 and A13,Le Havre toParis
**The RN182 is used at a gap of the A131 across theSeine .
*The southwest part of the Périphérique around central Paris
*A6a and A10, Paris viaOrléans ,Tours andPoitiers toBordeaux

Spain , the E05 is signed. It uses the following roads:
*AP-8, France toSan Sebastián
*N-I , AP-1 and A-1, San Sebastián viaBurgos toMadrid ; ill signposting (A-8, E-5, E-80, E-70) at the fork of N-I and A-8 past Donostia/San Sebastian (E-5 and E-80 head actually south alongside N-1)
*M-40 around the east side of Madrid
*N-IV and A-4, Madrid via Córdoba andSevilla toCádiz
