Gregory Ivy (1904-1985) was chairman of the art department at Woman's College, now the
University of North Carolina at Greensboro , from 1935 to 1961.Education
Ivy was born in Clarksburg, Missouri, in 1904. He attended the State Teachers College of Central Missouri at Warrensburg, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in art and agriculture in 1928. In 1932 he received a master's degree in art from
Columbia University . He completed other postgradute work atNew York University .Career
As chairman of the art department at Woman's College, Ivy introduced the state of North Carolina to contemporary painting. Under his leadership, the department acquired a national reputation. For many years, Woman's College was the only college offering bachelor's and master's degrees in painting. Ivy was also instrumental in establishing the Weatherspoon Art Gallery and the Weatherspoon Art Guild.
During
World War II , Ivy served in the Camouflage School of theUS Army . He left his position at Woman's College in 1961 and joined the firm of Lowenstein and Atkinson as design coordinator. Later he served as profosser of art atCalifornia State University, Fullerton , from 1965 to 1971, as well as serving as the chairman of the department from 1965 to 1967. Ivy retired in 1971 and relocated to Missouri. He passed away in 1985.See also
