Many hospitals in New York provide ambulances that respond to 911 calls. These are called "voluntary" hospitals. They should not be confused with "volunteer" ambulances. "Volunteer" ambulances are generally free-of-charge; "voluntary" ambulances charge for their services.
New York City is somewhat unique in that its emergency medical services are not all provided by a single organization. The Fire Department stations ambulances in certain areas, voluntary ambulances cover areas not served by the FDNY, and volunteer ambulances augment both in many neighborhoods.
