1st Battlecruiser Squadron (United Kingdom)

The 1st Battlecruiser Squadron was a Royal Navy squadron of battlecruisers that saw service as part of the Grand Fleet during World War 1.

August 1914

in August 1914, the 1st Battlecruiser Squadron was attached to the Grand Fleet, and consisted of [Dittmar, F.J & Colledge J.J., "British Warships 1914-1919" Ian Allan, London. 1972; ISBN 0-7110-0380-7] :
* "HMS Lion"
* "HMS Princess Royal"
* "HMS Queen Mary"
* "HMS New Zealand" On 15 January, 1915, HMS "New Zealand" was transferred as flagship of the 2nd Battlecruiser Squadron. HMS "Indomitable" briefly joined the squadron, before transferring to join her sister ships in the 3rd Battlecruiser Squadron. HMS Tiger joined the squadron on completion.

Battle of Jutland

By 1916, the 1st BCS comprised HMS "Queen Mary", HMS "Princess Royal", and HMS "Tiger", with HMS "Lion" as Battlecruiser Force flagship [Macintyre, Donald. "Jutland" Evans Brothers Ltd. 1957; ISBN 0-330-20142-5] .
* "Princess Royal" Flagship of Rear Admiral O. de B. Brock; Captain W. H. Cowan
* "Queen Mary" Captain C. I. Prowse
* "Tiger" Captain H. B. Pelly

All ships were damaged in the engagement, with HMS "Queen Mary" exploding, killing all but nine of her 1,266 crew.

After Jutland

In late 1916, the two Renown class battlecruisers, HMS Renown and HMS Repulse joined the squadron, with HMS "Repulse" becoming flagship.
