Duroch Islands

Duroch Islands

Duroch Islands (63°18′S 57°54′W / 63.3°S 57.9°W / -63.3; -57.9) is a group of islands and rocks which extend over an area of about 3 miles (4.8 km), centering about 1 mile (1.6 km) northwest of Cape Legoupil, off the north coast of Trinity Peninsula. Discovered by a French expedition under Captain Jules Dumont d'Urville, 1837–40, who gave the name "Rocher Duroch" to one of the largest islands in the group. The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), which charted the islands in 1946, recommended that the name Duroch be extended to include the entire group of islands. Named for Ensign Joseph Duroch of d'Urville's expedition ship, the Astrolabe.
