Non-surgical spinal decompression

Non-surgical spinal decompression

Non-surgical spinal decompression is a form of intermittent motorized traction used as treatment for disc herniations and low back pain.

One widely marketed brand of equipment for spinal decompression is VAX-D. The treatment has several variant versions, including articulating spinal decompression or range-of-motion (ROM) decompression, which enables the doctor or therapist to adjust the patient's spinal posture during the decompression. Varying the spine's postures enables the decompression pulling forces to reach into spinal areas and tissues that basic linear decompression misses. The Antalgic-Trak is a brand name for an articulating decompression system. ["Chiropractic Economics", May 2006, EmpowerDoctor.com author Doug Fogel, March 2008]

A 2007 review of published research on this treatment method found shortcomings in most published studies and concluded that there was only "very limited evidence in the scientific literature to support the effectiveness of non-surgical spinal decompression therapy."Dwain M Daniel, [http://www.chiroandosteo.com/content/15/1/7 Non-surgical spinal decompression therapy: does the scientific literature support efficacy claims made in the advertising media?] , "Chiropractic and Osteopathy", 2007, 15:7]
